Haramara Sal Sanctuary

Inviting women to reclaim their spiritual power

Creating safe spaces

A resource supporting the end to abuse in spiritual practices

This organization is driven by an unwavering commitment to shed light
on the harrowing issue of sexual abuse within spiritual spaces.
Abuse, whether physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, financial, material, or discriminatory
leaves scars that go beyond the visible.
We are here to remind you that you are not alone.

We are here to listen to people who would like to share their stories and have a safe space to seek the necessary help that is required. We can help with sharing information on how to take action, how to seek therapeutic help if you have been a victim of abuse in the spiritual space and actions you can take when dealing with these situations. We would like to create awareness of discernment to ensure all participants in this space can differentiate these behaviors and empower themselves to ensure when to walk away, speak up and take responsibility when situations are dangerous to themselves and others.

Pillars of Prevention

Recognize the Signs of Abuse

Spiritual abuse can manifest in various forms, including manipulation, control, intimidation, or exploitation under the guise of spiritual guidance.Learn to identify red flags such as excessive control, isolation from friends and family, emotional manipulation, or any form of physical, sexual, or financial exploitation.

Trust Your Instincts

If something feels wrong or uncomfortable, trust your instincts. Spiritual settings should promote personal growth, well-being, and empowerment, not fear or submission. It's essential to recognize that spiritual leaders or communities should not coerce individuals into actions or beliefs that go against their core values or make them feel unsafe.

Seek Support from Trusted Individuals

Reach out to friends, family, or professionals who can provide emotional support and guidance. Isolation is a common tactic used in abusive situations, so maintaining connections with others is crucial. If possible, connect with individuals who have experienced similar situations or seek the assistance of support groups and organizations specializing in abuse recovery.

Educate Yourself on Healthy Spirituality

Familiarize yourself with healthy spiritual practices and understand the principles of a positive, empowering spiritual environment.Healthy spirituality encourages personal growth, autonomy, and a sense of community. Educating oneself on the characteristics of a positive spiritual experience can help individuals distinguish between genuine spiritual growth and manipulative tactics.

Other Resources & Organizations

Remember, seeking professional help from therapists, counselors, or organizations that specialize in abuse recovery is crucial. If someone is in immediate danger, it's important to contact local law enforcement or emergency services for assistance.

Who we are/team

Fernanda Baraybar

If you ask me why we created this project I can say that nothing inspires me more than seeing women and girls find their inner power. I can speak to you about the abuse I’ve witnessed, the spiritual hypocrisy of gurus, shamans or spiritual teachers that I’ve seen continuing the pattern of abuse and re-traumatization. But the truth is, I am here because throughout my experience I always wished to have an organization that could support me through these difficult experiences. A place that could give me guidance, validate my experience, and help me through the darkness in order to become the strong, assertive woman I am today. And for this reason, we have created this space. For all the people that have wished for the same.I am here, not only to help empower you through your spiritual journey, but also to present myself as a safe space. To let you know you are not alone.Together we can rise into a world where our “no” is respected. Where we are assured when entering a safe space. Where our healing is revered and our goddess nature is known to all.I love you. I see you. Here, you are safe.Shaman, Transpersonal Psychologist M.D. (2025), Activist, Artist.

Juliana Arango

From being witness to countless women afraid to voice their experience with men in leadership positions within communities proud to walk a medicine/spiritual path, this project was born. There are tornados of truth blowing up, taking massive force, calling me to join forces with other feminine leaders in hopes of rectifying misuses of power and establishing ethics + integrity in the spiritual space. As a medicine woman, transpersonal therapist, transformational coach, yoga instructor, energy worker, and ritual ceremonialist, I hold a responsibility to protect life. The sexual abuse happening behind closed doors creates invisible wounds that need tending. Haramara Sal Sanctuary is a salve for women to have their stories shared with the world at large. Join our workshops and community to make sense of your experience by releasing shame and reclaiming power.Sacred Union is being restored inside of every person and relationship called to embark on a conscious path. I am here to call both women and men in, to the ways they abandon the true self through radical responsibility and truth-telling.Non-judgment, compassion, empathy, and rivers of forgiveness are my flow. May we rise up into unity consciousness by descending down into murky terrain. Let’s get to work, the Great Mother beholds!

Cristina

My name is Cristina, I have been trained as a Trauma Informed and Sensitive Yoga facilitator. I am a survivor of sexual abuse and I have been through different therapies that have helped me to feel safe, connected and compassionate with my body and live a healthy, present, authentic life. My healing path grants me the mission to accompany other people who have gone through trauma in their lives. One of the most powerful tools I have discovered is the methodology of Trauma Sensitive Yoga.I know how much it can harm us to remain silent, unfortunately trauma is still taboo, we don't speak up about it for various reasons; however, the less we want to talk about trauma, the greater our individual and collective pain will be. That is why when I learned about, studied and integrated the methodology of Trauma Sensitive Yoga into my life and the spaces I facilitate, I realized what a powerful healing tool it is on an individual and collective level. One of my dreams is that all people, institutions, universities, governments, holistic spaces, hospitals, etc; know about the trauma-informed approach, to avoid retraumatization at all costs.Creator of anti-racist, decolonial, trauma-informed content in @espaciosuyai/Activist/Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator.

Stories

At Haramara we believe our stories are our catharsis.

Not only is sharing your heart a way to release your experience, it can help inspire others through their own journeys. We believe every story has a purpose and together we can bring awareness to stopping abuse in spiritual spaces. We would like to disclaim that this space is NOT used for accusations, name calling nor a way to review your bad experiences. We vow to keep this space confidential and are happy to help you through the process of reclamation if you choose to claim your story.

Story #1

In January of 2020 I set out for a soul-quest to the mystical Lake Atitlan of Guatemala. Here’s my story of a well-known charlatan who abuses his power in the hopes that other young vulnerable travelers don’t fall for the tricks. I traveled with a women’s group led by a former Guatemalan professor of mine on a cultural immersive retreat. It was here that I had my first encounter with the Tz’utujil people of San Pedro and sat in powerful cacao ceremonies with Nana Marina. I learned about the Popol Vuh, Mayan Calendar, and my nahual. Let’s just say Mayan astrology and cosmology spoke to me in a language my Spirit deciphered and resonated with. The ceremonial way of working with the fire and cacao touched me deeply. I was sure this was the place where I would deepen spiritually. When it came time to say goodbye to the group of women as they all prepared to journey back home to their comfortable lives, they of course thought I was crazy. The professor was especially worried for me…
